All around him, the stars flashed and sparkled, and the smell of wet grass reached for his nose, calming his frayed nerves. Before him stood a lake, reflecting the sky above, winding far and wide past the gigantic dark shapes of mountains, and trees swaying gently in the breeze. He stood on the only patch of grass, no larger than a barrow in the centre of the lake; the shore being lapped by small waves far in the distance. Jonas could not see it, but he could hear the water rolling over small rocks and pebbles.

‘Touch nothing?’ Jonas pondered, scratching his head. ‘There’s nothing to touch...’ He reached down into the cool water, splashing it over his face, and saw the stars move with the ripples of the water. Head tilted, he reached down again slowly, trying not to disturb the water, until tiny pebbles scraped against his fingers. Hand cupped, he carefully withdrew, his hand lined with a profusion of glittering stars, hundreds of them, all just in his palm. One dropped from his hand and splashed into the lake, birthing a gigantic ripple that spread far and wide, before a vision appeared in the water. Jonas jumped back, clasping his hand shut not to drop any more.

It was the big woman but younger, and her figure was not as rounded yet. She sat on the edge of a wharf, feet dangling over the side, while she mumbled songs with a sweet youthful voice, a fishing pole in her hands, with some line dangling in the water. She was the only one there, enjoying the early sun rising over the water, fish leaping out in flashes of silver.

‘Ugh! I’m so bored. These fish don’t want to eat anything,’ she muttered, kicking her toe through the water and flicking up a spray into the air. The sun beetles sang their songs, loud and proud, a shrill cry for attention. Crickets and frogs chirped and croaked the day away, while the woman continued her pursuit of fish. She turned around, searching the forest behind her, and seeing no one, laid her pole down.

She turned to lie flat on her stomach and reached for the water, slipping her hands under the murkiness. Eyes closed, she started to giggle and laugh, like she was being tickled, her mouth stretching wide with joy, goosebumps riding her skin. All around her, the water came alive, white foam forming on the choppy tops, a whirlpool of aggravated fish getting closer. Fish jumped from all over, leaping onto the wooden deck and knocking into the girl. At first there was joy, with the abundance of food suddenly available, but then it turned into a disturbance in their nature. Fish of all sizes and forms crashed into the platform, rocking it violently, and even after the girl yanked her hands from the water, they did not stop.

A screech of terror escaped her as she grabbed the rod and net from the ground and ran for the land, arms flailing to keep her balance on the rickety old deck.
